October is National Code Enforcement/ Compliance Month

October is National Code Enforcement/Compliance Month. We at SSCS asks that you take a few minutes to reflect on the work of code enforcement officers, inspectors, and staff that are committed to protecting public health, safety and welfare of buildings in our communities through the effective use of state, county, and municipal codes. They are tasked with enforcing housing code, zoning code, nuisance abatement, health, sanitation and safety, and special enforcement often associated with historic districts (depending on the community).

As the “eyes and ears” of many communities, officers and inspectors work hard to prevent and eliminate blight and neighborhood deterioration while working toward the enhancement of property preservation and life safety. They are subject to verbal abuse, called a variety of terms (I always giggled at “lawn police”), get threatened, get into a variety of weird situations that you can’t just make up, and often help people go from deplorable living environments to viable, nurturing happy homes.

I have been fortunate to work in a code enforcement capacity for many years. For me, working in very diverse communities in California, Utah, and Illinois has given me an amazing education as well as the ability to safely and effectively do my job. I’ve learned to have thicker skin, listen better, think outside the box, and be creative in giving back to the communities. I have met so many wonderful people; relationships I hold dear today.

So, as you wander through your community, send a little thank you to your code enforcement/compliance officer.
