What Could Richie From The Bear Teach Us About Hospitality and City Hall?

If you watched The Bear (shoutout to my fellow Chicagoans)on FX, you probably remember Richie discovering 𝘜𝘯𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘣𝘺 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘢.

And if you know Richie, hospitality wasn't exactly where we thought this guy was headed.

But something changes. He begins to understand that great service isn't simply about completing the task in front of you. It's about paying attention. It's about intention. It's about noticing the person on the other side of the interaction.

At the end of the episode, it got me thinking...

What would happen if we brought a little of that Richie transformation into City Hall?

What does hospitality have to do with municipal government? More than we might think.

Making Magic in Municipal Work

Every phone call, inspection, permit application, public meeting, and front-counter conversation creates an experience for someone in our community. Making Magic in Municipal Work explores how the principles of hospitality can help municipal professionals make those experiences more intentional, respectful, and productive.

Using concepts from 𝘜𝘯𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, we’ll look at the power of communication, the moments that matter, service versus servitude, and how internal team culture directly influences the public experience.

Hospitality in municipal government doesn’t mean saying yes to everything or compromising our responsibilities. It means recognizing that how we deliver our service matters just as much as the service itself.

Designed for inspectors, administrative staff, department leaders, mayors, council members, and anyone who interacts with the public, this class will challenge you to think differently about public service—and the experience your organization creates every day.
